Man charged with collecting dead mother's checks

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) - A central Kentucky man has been charged with collecting his dead mother's Social Security checks and lying to the government for 29 years.

A federal grand jury indicted Frederick Ray Clark of Scott County last week, saying Clark's mother, Martha Jane Clark, began getting payments from Social Security after her husband died.

Martha Jane Clark died in August 1985, which would have ended her benefits. The grand jury concluded that the Social Security Administration was not informed of her death.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported ( ) that as recently as May, Frederick Ray Clark told police from the agency that his mother had lived with him and his wife for 30 years and still did.

Court records did not list an attorney for Clark or a pending court date.
