Team keeps Paducah floodwall murals fresh

Posted: Updated:

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - A team of painters has spent up to four months each summer retouching Paducah's historic floodwall murals in an effort to keep the public art looking bright and colorful.

Herb Roe leads the painters in the "Wall-to-Wall" project each summer. Along with Roe, Benny Graeff, Doug Dafford, Mike Doherty and Robert Dafford, all from the company Robert Dafford Murals based in Lafayette, Louisiana, make the trip to take part in the task of matching the color and brush stroke of the original mural.

Roe researched and designed about half of the murals on the wall.

Roe told The Paducah Sun it takes two to three weeks to finish retouching a single mural.

Paducah Mayor Gayle Kaler said each year a number of the murals need some degree of restoration.
