Cairo teen denies being kidnapped by boyfriend

GRADY COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A Cairo teenager that police and family members initially thought was kidnapped is safe. She claims she wasn't kidnapped and now she's in jail.

19-year-old Courtney Godwin and 23-Year-old Sonny Pilgrim are in jail in Missouri now awaiting extradition to Illinois where they face felony tampering with a motor vehicle and drug charges. Godwin's grandfather told police in Illinois he believed Pilgrim kidnapped Godwin from his home. That was news that terrified her mother.

"Law enforcement there called me and said she was involved in an incident, hours later they told me she was kidnapped at knife point against her will,” said Sherry Osborn.

When the two were taken into custody at a truck stop in New Madrid, Missouri, Godwin told police that she went willingly with her boyfriend. Her family says they just want her to come home.

"Courtney just call me and tell me your okay that is all that matters,” said Osborn.

Godwin's family still believes that she was forced to flee with Pilgrim. Her grandfather Carl Van Ness told me on the phone that he could hear his granddaughter crying hysterically in another room while Pilgrim held him at knife point and took the keys to his Chevy equinox.

"I know teen girls don't want to talk to their mother but, I love that girl so much and I will not judge her for what has happened,” said Osborn.

After nearly nineteen hours of not knowing where Godwin was, the family is just glad that she is safe, even if she is behind bars.
