DONETSK,UKRAINE (CNN) - All of the heartbreak and the frustration over the investigation of MH17 is taking place in an active conflict zone and innocent civilians are paying a high cost.

A question to a separatist fighter in eastern Ukraine was what would you like to say to the families of flight MH17?

“Guys, we didn't do it. We didn't shoot,” he says, and walks away.

An emotional denial from a rebel on the front lines of a war that's spilled into this separatist-controlled city.

An hour and a half drive from the crashed plane, rockets keep falling on Donetsk.

Not a lot left to what was a bus station hit either by rockets or artillery on late Thursday night. And it's clear that this is a residential area. A little stall, it's working, right next to where the shells have landed. And Yulya is working.

She’s sitting in a damaged little shop selling bread because she says people need it. There's no electricity. There's no water, but people still need to eat.

The sound of artillery echoes day and night.

After Thursday night's bombardment, it's a miracle Misha Bat is still alive.

Misha says a shell landed on his house.

Pieces of a rocket nearby.

Some shell-shocked residents blame this nasty little war on the Ukrainian government.

"How can you start a war in your own country? How?" one woman asks.

While others blame pro-Russian separatists.

"Those who like Russia they impose on me the situation that I must live in Russia. This situation is unjust,” a man says.

Human Rights Watch says Ukrainian government rockets are killing civilians in Donetsk.

"The four attacks that we investigated killed 16 civilians and injured many more. But obviously in this war there are many more killed and we are calling on both the Ukrainian government and insurgent forces to immediately stop the use of unguided rockets in populated areas,” said Ole Solvang, a senior emergencies researcher with Human Rights Watch.

A lone bouquet marks the spot where 22- year-old Anastasia Rudh collapsed Thursday night after she was mortally wounded by shrapnel.

The rocket slammed into an apartment building.

Those who can now run away.

Those who can't simply weep.
