(CNN) - Ebola fears are hitting closer to home, with the first reported death of an American from the outbreak.

Patrick Sawyer was heading to a conference, when he collapsed getting off a plane in Nigeria.

Patrick Sawyer had been infected with Ebola in Liberia, where he worked for its government.

Sawyer was planning to return to his wife and three young daughters in Minnesota.

Decontee Sawyer spoke about her husband's passion to help the Liberian people gain the same freedoms we have in the U.S.

“I wanted him here with me, and the girls. He felt like Liberia needed him more, and he felt like he needed to fight the good fight in Liberia. He wanted like a better democracy for Liberia. He would say "Liberia doesn't have a middle class,” she said. “We have very poor and very rich" because he lived in America for so many years and so he wanted like a better democracy for Liberia, a middle class. He was big on social justice.”

The World Health Organization says the latest Ebola outbreak plaguing West Africa right now is the worst on record.
