Cape Girardeau man pleads guilty to manslaughter in nightclub death

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Cape Girardeau man pleaded guilty to involuntary first-degree manslaughter on Tuesday in connection with a nightclub shooting.

Alexander S. Harris, 25, of Cape Girardeau pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement to dismiss unrelated gun charges.

He was sentenced to five years.

Nicholas Gilbert, 32, died in after a scuffle at inside "The Spot" nightclub on the 433 S. Sprigg St. on Dec. 16, 2012.

Gilbert and Harris' brother were in a disagreement when as some point, a gun was drawn by an unknown person.

Harris took the gun and it went off. The bullet went through Harris' hand and into Gilbert's chest. Gilbert died on the dance floor.

Harris' brother was initially charged with the crime. Harris was arrested on Jan. 31, 2014 for drug offenses. After that, a plea agreement was worked out concerning the shooting.
