LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An amateur artist is expected to be the highlight of a charity art exhibit this week. While his work is expected to fetch a couple hundred dollars, buyers may be more impressed with his artistic temperament.

The 6-year-old, who just picked up a brush last year, will be featured in an auction gallery alongside nationally renowned artists.

The "Paw"-casso behind the canvas, is a poodle named Polo.

"He took on pretty fast," Ann Sheltz said of her painting poodle.

Since poodles are retrievers, she knew if Polo learned key commands, he could pick up her talent.

"It just made sense. I enjoy training and I've been painting for 10 years, so it just made sense the two of them went together," Sheltz said.

All it took was time, patience and a treat.

"After he understood not to chew the paintbrush, then it went fine. But it was pretty much take and chew," Sheltz said.

Since she doesn't sell Polo's paintings, it made sense to donate one to benefit other canines and cats.

"It is a great conversation piece because it's a painting by a pet at an event to raise money for pets," said Mary Casey with the Shamrock Pet Foundation.

Shamrock Pet Foundation is dedicated to ending pet overpopulation, aid animals that are in distress, ill or injured and adopt animals into loving, lifetime homes.

The organization will hold its 18th annual Art for the Animals live and silent auction Thursday, August 7.

Polo's piece will be featured during the event.

"I have no interest in selling it myself. I wanted it to benefit a trusted organization like Shamrock Pet Foundation," Sheltz said.
