CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Cape Girardeau water treatment plant operators say residents need not worry about their drinking water.

An explosive algae bloom in Lake Erie left half a million people in Ohio without safe water for days. The tap water there is clean now but the problems that lead up to the contamination were both natural and man-made.

Alliance Water Resources, who manages Cape Girardeau's water treatment, switched from treating water from the Mississippi River to pumping water in from natural underground wells in 2010.

Plant manager Kevin Priester said water quality in the wells is much more stable and easier to manage.

Still, he said plant operators take no risks when it comes to monitoring water quality.

"We still have kept a lot of those standard operating procedures in place where it's maybe a little overkill for well water but we could see something coming well in advance," Priester said.

Technology allows workers to have up to the minute reports on quality in the wells and throughout the different stages of the plant.

Priester said the underground wells are influenced by the river, but many of the pollutants get filtered out naturally by the time the water reaches the wells hundreds of feet underground.
