Two arrested for leaving children home alone to allegedly pick up drugs

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A knock on your door in the middle of the night. You'd probably think the worst.

But a Butler County woman opened her door early on Wednesday morning to find a six-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl.

Police say the children were left home alone because their mom and another man reportedly left to pick up drugs.

Court papers say the children woke up and realized they were alone, so they went to a neighbor's house on Haystack Lane in Poplar Bluff.

That neighbor then called police.

When officers arrived, they took the kids home and searched the trailer, but there were no adults inside.

However, officials say they did find meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Soon after, Thomas Teyssier and Savanah Lovette came home.

Lovette said they left to go pick up her wallet and wrote a note in case the kids woke up.

But police say inside that wallet was more meth.

"Unfortunately that's quite often the case where children are put on the back burner," said Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs. "They're a second hand issue with parents who are drug addicted and have drug problems. They fall way down the line and they aren't well cared for. There's all kinds of concerns to be had with drug abusers."

Teyssier and Lovette are both charged with possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of a child. They're both in jail.

The two children were removed from the home and tonight are in the care of the Missouri Children's Division.
