INDIO, CA (NESQ/CBS) - The Indio Police Department is using a new barrier system to block off serious accident and crime scenes and also protect victims and anyone passing by.

Two months ago the department purchased a portable barrier system called the SNR 1000. It's a privacy screen law enforcement agencies use to keep curious onlookers from rubbernecking.

Sgt. Dan Marshall said the screen also protects its officers working a scene, serving as a protective barrier.

Additionally, the department became concerned about an increasing number of people posting pictures on social media.

"Once a picture gets on the internet it's there forever," said Marshall. "So we're taking those steps right up front before anyone even knows about it to try and get and to give the family some privacy."

The Indio Police Department is among the few law enforcement agencies in the state using the SNR 1000 barrier system.
