Man accused of taking gun from restaurant table

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

A western Kentucky man is accused of taking a gun from a booth at a fast food restaurant last week.

Michael J. Lewis, 35, of Symsonia, Kentucky was charged in a warrant with theft by unlawful taking of a firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm

According to police, a man told them he left a firearm at the restaurant located on Clark's River Road. He said when he returned to get it, it was gone.

A surveillance photograph of the suspected thief was distributed. A number of callers to the Crime Stoppers tip-line identified the man as Michael Lewis.

The following day, a man called the restaurant and said he had not stolen the gun, but had moved it and placed it near a dumpster behind the restaurant.

An employee found the gun right where he had cleaned 30 minutes prior.

Thompson believes that the caller was Lewis, and that Lewis brought the gun back to McDonald's and put it near the dumpster, then called the restaurant so it would be found.

The .32-caliber handgun remains at the Paducah Police Department. The investigation is continuing.
