Covington County jailer charged with smuggling contraband

COVINGTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

A corrections officer at the Covington County Jail is facing multiple charges for allegedly bringing contraband into the jail in exchange for money.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks said in a press release that Lee Nelson was arrested on 27 counts of promoting prison contraband 3rd degree.

Nelson, 36, of Kinston, is accused of bringing unauthorized items into the jail on several occasions over two months.

He has been terminated and is being held in the jail on a bond of $15,000 per count -- a total of $405,000.

Nelson had been an employee at the jail for about three years.
