Book helps teach kids about guns

Posted: Updated:
MISSOURI (KFVS) - As your kids get ready to head back to school, they'll start getting their math book, science book and history book.

But there's one book that more parents are picking up for their kids to read on their own time.

Some parents say it will help teach kids about guns.

"We want him to know how important it is," said Paige Wilson.

Aaron and Paige Wilson make it a family affair at the Apple Creek gun range.

Wilson said he taught his son to start shooting at just three years old.

"So he feels comfortable with guns, not only does he feel comfortable with guns but he uses them safely, and we feel safe taking him with us when we go hunting or out here on the range because we know he is performing everything like he was taught," said Paige Wilson.

Now there's another teaching tool.

The book is called "My Parents Open Carry."

According to the publishing company, sales of this book in recent weeks have gone up.

The plot: a family spends the day together running errands, while both parents openly carry handguns.

"I think that children should know firearm safety even at an early age, that doesn't necessarily mean I think they should pick one up and play with it," said Cory Stallings.

Stallings takes his 12-year-old son to the range.

"I think it's good quality time," said Matthew Stallings.

He said he thinks it's important to talk to your kids about guns and gun safety early.

"I think it's important that you know how to safely and properly use a gun at the range or not, it's good for a kid to know that stuff," said Matthew Stallings.

Pro-gun enthusiasts say the book stands up for 2nd Amendment rights, and brings gun ownership into the mainstream.

While the group Parents Against Gun Violence issued a statement in response to the book.

In part it reads:

"This book, written by gun activists, seems to be a poor attempt at convincing Americans that it is desirable to increase the number of loaded guns around Americans, including children, in everyday situations…While we strongly support providing children with information that will protect them from gun violence, this book crosses the line from information into the realm of indoctrination."

You can find the book on Amazon, check it out here.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
