Man sentenced for making threats to Poplar Bluff VA Medical Center

WINONA, MO (KFVS) -

A Winona, Missouri man has been sentenced to a year and one month for making threats to the Poplar Bluff VA Medical Center.

Markel Abbey, 57, was sentenced on two felony counts of threat by interstate communication. He appeared before U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr.

On June 17 and June 28, 2013, Abbey made telephone calls to the Veterans  Administration Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo., and made a threat to physically harm his treating physician and members of the hospital staff.

Abbey was arrested after a assaulting a VA employee.

Officials searched Abbey's car after his arrest and found two firearms and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

The case was investigated by the Veterans Administration Medical Center's Office of Inspector General and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant United States Attorney Keith D. Sorrell is handling the prosecution for the government.
