Illinois legislation equips emergency responders for faster response

JOHNSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation to improve emergency response services in rural areas.

The bill would allow an EMT to perform advanced life saving skills in a basic life saving ambulance, like administering IVs or drugs.

It can become an issue in rural areas where it can take as long at 45 minutes from the time the call comes in to the time the patient reaches the hospital.

Johnson County emergency responders say the change would improve the patients care and lessen the risk of serious medical problems.

“If we know that someone is having a stroke and we know that they are going to need care as far as surgery, we are going to call in a helicopter, so they can get to a hospital that is going to take care of them a lot quicker,” said Wendi Bailey, Johnson County Ambulance Director.

Bailey said the Johnson County Ambulance District covers 335 square miles, 50 percent of calls come from rural areas.

It 15 minutes before they can reach a patient. That time doubles in bad weather conditions.
