Couple gives back to cancer patients

Posted: Updated:

Every day thousands of cancer patients need a ride to treatment, but some may not have a way to get there. That's where the program "Road to Recovery" comes in.

It's a program through the American Cancer Society.

"We are a team and I like to say that we tag team it," Marla Hardesty said.

The Hardesty team first started in 2010 after David retired. The following year his wife, Marla, got on board.

"We are like everybody else," David Hardesty said. "You can't hardly pick anybody in a crowd who hasn't been touched by cancer."

David's parents both had cancer. Marla's grandmother and aunt passed away from cancer. Her uncle is currently fighting the disease, so they know what people like Beth Cole are going through.

"My husband is Mark Cole and he has stage 3 lung cancer," Beth Cole said.

Cole said at the time of the diagnosis they didn't have a car and needed Team Hardesty to pick them up.

"We lived 9 miles away from a town with no transportation and no cell phone," Cole said. "Without it, this would not have been possible."

"I think it gives a relief and a peace of mind to know that they are not always having to ask their family because like many of us our patients don't like to impose," Pam Buccheit with Southeast Hospital said.

Cole said Team Hardesty makes her and her family feel like rock stars by the way they treat them.

"We just enjoy the time with them," David Hardesty said. "If they wan to talk, we talk. If they don't feel like talking, we don't push it. We let them set the tone for the ride."
