Carbondale PD to comply with 'sign and drive'

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Governor Pat Quinn has signed the new law to end the practice of police accepting a valid driver's license as security for certain traffic citations in Illinois.

The Carbondale Police Department says it will comply with this law when it goes into effect in 2015.

The “Sign and Drive” law will allow drivers to keep their ID if issued a traffic citation during a traffic stop, and be released with their signature on appropriate traffic citations.

The Carbondale Police Department says they will continue with normal policies and procedures of accepting a driver's license as a security for appropriate traffic citations until 2015.

The law goes into effect on January 1.
