CHESTER, IL (KFVS) -

Hundreds of Chester, Illinois residents are being evacuated due to gas leak caused by a downed power line. That's according to fire crews on the scene.

According to Fire Chief Marty Bert, natural gas was shut off to about 500 of Chester's homes. This is on the east side of town, according to fire department.

The fire department says to be patient with the City gas employees as they are working to restore service. A representative will be by to turn your gas back on and relight pilot lights. Please do not turn your gas back on yourself.

Bert says a downed power line caused a van fire and welded itself to a gas line, creating a hole in the line.

The neighborhood around Hackey and Swanwick was evacuated for safety reasons.

Crews are going home to home to check the meters and shut them off.

This all started around 5:25 a.m. when a call came in about a power line down.

It's not clear when residents will be let back into their homes.

Part of the town was without power Saturday morning, according to the Randolph County Post Publisher Dennis Cole. He says a power line was down by the van, as well.

As of 10 a.m. Ameren UE reported 35 outages in Chester, Illinois.

Heartland News has a crew on the way to the scene.
