Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge to burn wheat fields

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge plans to carry out three prescribed burns to help hunting opportunities in the area.

These burns are planned in the agricultural fields off Greenbriar Road, Old State Route 13 (near Blue Heron Marina) and Cambria Road.

Fire managers continue to check weather conditions, hoping to be able to conduct the prescribed burn sometime between August 26 and September 5.

Winter and spring wheat fields that were planted by agriculture cooperators are planned to be burned.

Biologist along with fire mangers will work together to burn off the dead wheat stalks if weather conditions permit.

Wildlife officials say this will make the seeds more available to ground feeding birds such as mourning doves.

And, they say it should increase hunter opportunities.

For more information about dates for upcoming dove hunts, please contact the Refuge Visitor Center at 618-998-5954 or 618-998-5950.
