United Way meets with church leaders on poverty

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The United Way of Southeast Missouri wants you to rethink poverty.

Thursday, the organization met with church leaders in Cape Girardeau.

A member of the United Way says they want to bring the issue of poverty to the forefront, because the numbers in Cape Girardeau alone may be surprising to some people.

"Poverty is often invisible because we don't see it here, so we think its not here but truly our poverty rate here in Cape County is over 15 percent in the city its over 22 percent," Melissa Stickel of the United Way said. "So it exists its here. Understanding that it's here, that's the first step in doing something about it acknowledging that it does exist."

The United Way's effort is part of a monthly series of meetings between them and local agencies.

The next meeting will be September 19 with local financial leaders.
