Mall employee chases suspects to their car

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Police in Cape Girardeau, Missouri are still searching for two suspects believed to have stolen things from West Park Mall over the weekend.

A store employee actually followed them out to their car because he heard a woman screaming for help.

Daniel Ellinghouse said he was getting their license plate number when he realized the car was coming forward.

He said he jumped out of the way, but the front end of the car clipped his shin causing him to go airborne and land on the car.

Ellinghouse said he fell when the suspects back turned out of the parking lot. He broke his leg in the process, but said he was able to give the license number to police.

"I just wanted to get the license plate but the wording and what made me act was when a woman or any citizen screams for help, I immediately spring to action," he said. "I mean it just what I felt compelled to do."

Ellinghouse said mall employees work together to prevent shoplifting.

"We are always, like, of looking out for each other and helping each other," he said. "We talk a lot. Everyone in the stores tries to keep in contact with each other. We generally know each other on a first name basis."

Officer Darin Hickey with the Cape Girardeau police department says this is the third mall theft in a 30-day period, but the numbers are about the same as last year so far.

Officer Hickey said they are in the process of pulling video from the mall cameras and anyone with information is urged to call police.
