Kennett launches new campaign to keep sales dollars in town

KENNETT, MO (KFVS) -

The Kennett Chamber of Commerce is unveiling a new program dubbed the Shop Kennett Campaign to encourage people to shop local.

Executive Director Melissa Combs said "Kennett Cash" is the launching point of the new program.

Combs said the idea is to boost sales of the Chamber of Commerce members while keeping sales dollars in the community.

"The more money we put back into our local economy, the less money we give to other cities and states," Combs said. "And the more money we put back into our community the greater chance we have to grow."

Combs called it a gift card program.

Residents buy certificates directly from the Chamber of Commerce.

They can then spend them like cash at participating chamber businesses.

Combs said only businesses a part of the Chamber of Commerce can take Kennett Cash as a form of payment.

"This Kennett Cash program will keep the money within the city, and give our chamber members a chance to receive a customer they may not have received before,"Combs said.

Holly Dollins, owner of Dollins Clothing, said he is in support of the program.

Dollins said local businesses offer a small town service residents can't find everywhere.

"We don't have taxes on our property here anymore, city taxes, and it's all sales taxes, and our town really needs the support," Dollins said. "... They can probably get it somewhere else but we give them good prices and good service.

Combs said the idea is not to raise money, but just keep the money in Kennett.

She said other communities have rolled out similar programs, and have generated amounts up to $50,000.
