NEW YORK (WCBS/CNN) – Victor Colon is thankful his goddaughter is alive.

Colon said if the baby hadn't been attended to as fast as she was, she could have died.

The baby girl, Adelyn Pena, is just two months old, and late Tuesday morning, she stopped breathing in her family's apartment on the Grand Concourse.

Colon says he put the child on a table, while the baby's mother called 911 for help and to get instructions over the phone.

“She had phlegm in her mouth and I gave her pats on the back. At first, I had her on the table, then I brought her up. I pushed her three times softly, and then she started breathing,” Colon said through a translator.

Outside the building, using a radar gun on traffic, Officer Johnny Castillo heard the call over his radio of an unconscious child.

“I was right across the street from it,” Castillo said.

Castillo ran into the apartment building, took the elevator to the sixth floor, and said he found the child on the dining room table unresponsive.

“I picked the baby up, started chest compression, full compression, [then] the baby woke up, she came to,” Castillo said.

The officer, a four-year veteran of the force, spent 10 years as a decorated Army Ranger. He says his resuscitation efforts worked.

“It feels good, feels good, being part of bringing back a baby that could have possibly died,” Castillo said.

Family members are grateful the police officer was so close by and able to offer immediate assistance.
