Police chief: Boy hit by Amtrak train in Du Quoin

Du Quoin Police Chief Jamie Ellermeyer confirms a boy was hit by an Amtrak train Thursday afternoon in Du Quoin.

Ellermeyer says the boy was on a bicycle in the pedestrian crossing waiting for a train to go through the Main Street crossing around 4:30 p.m.

After a Canadian National train cleared the area, the boy rode through the crossing. Ellermeyer says the Amtrak train then came through the crossing and hit the boy in the upper leg and back area.

The boy sustained serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries, according to Ellermeyer. He was first taken to Marshall Browning Hospital and then to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis.

The Du Quoin Fire Department responded to the incident and helped ambulance crews.

The incident is still under investigation.
