Cape Girardeau jr. high students latest to get personal tablets

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Technology and education go hand in hand in today's society.

It's more apparent than ever as Cape Girardeau Public Schools expands it's 1 to 1 initiative to include junior high students.

The 1:1 initiative put tablets in the hands of high school students, but now seventh and eighth graders have the same technology at their fingertips.

Cape Girardeau Junior High students were each given a personal tablet when school started up about a week ago.

It's for use in the classroom and at home.

Teachers underwent training to better use the new technology in the classroom.

While Cape Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Sherry Copeland said it hasn't changed curriculum, she added that it better prepares students for their future.

"What they're doing right now is incorporating technology. Using it as a tool in their toolbox. It's not throwing out curriculum, throwing out old ways of teaching necessarily. We are still using best practices of teaching. This just makes it a little easier to do research, to keep kids engaged," said Copeland.

The same firewalls in place for high schoolers apply to junior high students as well.

So that means web sites like Facebook can't be accessed on the device whether or not they're on school grounds.

Copeland added the only complaint they've had is students staying up later working on their tablets, but she said that will change as students adjust to the technology and accessibility.
