The Carterville Lions kicked off the football season with a home opener against the Benton Rangers Friday night.
Carterville fans said they are looking to have a successful season.
Fans filled the stands and cheered as Carterville put up the first touchdown of the night, early into the first quarter.
One of those fans excited watch the game was Tom Armstrong.
Armstrong said the football environment at Carterville is fantastic.
"It has been the last 15 or 20 years," Armstrong said. "Before that it wasn't. We weren't too good before, but we're pretty good now."
Armstrong would know.
He played football for Carterville back in the 1940s, and then went on to teach and coach in the school system.
Armstrong said he loves coming to the football games, and weather permitting, he makes it to everyone.
"Playing and all, I started in 1946, back in there you know," Armstrong said. "... graduated from the high school, taught in the school system, for 34 years, I'm just a die hard lions fan."
The Carterville Lions will head to Massac County High School next week.
