Carbondale police investigating 2 armed robberies near SIU campus

According to police, the first robbery occurred in the 500 block of West Freeman Street. According to police, the first robbery occurred in the 500 block of West Freeman Street.
The second armed robbery happened on Saturday, August 30 at about 4:41 a.m. in the 500 block of South Ash Street. The second armed robbery happened on Saturday, August 30 at about 4:41 a.m. in the 500 block of South Ash Street.

Just as the new school year gets underway, Carbondale police report a string of armed robberies near the SIU campus.

The Carbondale Police Department responded to two armed robberies. One happened Friday evening and the other early Saturday morning.

According to police, the first robbery occurred in the 500 block of West Freeman Street. The second in the 500 block of South Ash Street.

The armed robbery in the 500 block of West Freeman Street happened on Friday, August 29 at 9:40 p.m.

The victim told police he was talking on his cell phone when he was approached by two black males. One black male showed a handgun and demanded money from the victim. The suspects then left the area. The victim was not hurt.

The second armed robbery happened on Saturday, August 30 at about 4:41 a.m. in the 500 block of South Ash Street.

The victim reported meeting a black male while walking home. The victim followed the suspect into a building where they were approached by a second suspect.

The first suspect then showed a handgun and demanded personal property from the victim. The two suspects left the area with the items. The victim was not hurt.

Two other robberies happened between Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 2:00 a.m. and Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. in the 300 and 400 blocks of West College Street, and in the area of South Beveridge Street and West Cherry Street. Police are still investigating.

The Carbondale Police Department is reminding residents to be aware of their surroundings when walking at night. Additional officers are patrolling the area.
