CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Do you work more than 40 hours a week? Turns out, you are not alone.

According to a new Gallup poll, most American adults work an average of 47 hours each week, almost a full day more than the "standard" five-day, 9-to-5 schedule.

The survey found that half of full-time employees work more than 40 hours each week and almost four in 10 claim to work 50 hours or more.

We asked online how many hours people in the Heartland typically work in an online poll.

Our findings were similar.

About 37 percent of people said they work between 41 and 49 hours.

However, 19 percent of people voted that their work week is usually more than 60 or more hours.

Charles Bertrand, the owner of Spanish Street Mercantile, said there are two reasons why he typically works about 60 hours a week.

 First, it's about the customers.

"You have to be open, you hate to say it, but you have to be open 7 days a week," Bertrand said. "... if you're going to make money, and you're going to have somebody, you have to have a reason to come to downtown Cape Girardeau and we have the reasons if we can just get them down here. So that's why we're open all the time."

Bertrand said he has a special role to tell people who come to his store from all over about the history of the place.

"It all has a history. It all has a story," Bertrand said. "And probably, I think that I have to be here as much as I can in order to tell the story about an old fashion ice cream shop."

Secondly, Bertrand said he has a passion for what he does.

"Every day is a different day, different people, different day, different product," Bertrand said. 'An ice cream shop is really a creative situation, we're building it, we're trying to make it better everyday. So I go home, I'm tired but after a good night's sleep, I'm ready to go the next morning very early."

According to Gallup's findings, the percentage of full-time workers in the U.S. has gone down since the recession began in 2007.

However, the number of hours people say they work each week has remained steady, at about 47.
