SCHODACK, NY (WTEN/CNN) – On Wednesday, former teen idol David Cassidy pleaded guilty to drunken driving in New York.

Cassidy was supposed to appear before a judge in July for a DWI arrest last August, but instead he was seen judging a Bocce ball contest.

He will be avoiding jail time thanks to a plea deal that downgraded his charge from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Cassidy, a recovering alcoholic, says he's relieved.

"I'm happy with the outcome. I'm not going to prison. That's a good thing,” Cassidy said. “I'm a guy who was in denial for many years about my alcoholism."

The local district attorney says Cassidy will have a breathalyzer installed on his cars and must complete sobriety treatment and 50 hours of community service.
