GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

Veteran leaders in Mayfield will soon put up a new monument to honor fallen war heroes from Graves County.

Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell says the tribute to local Vietnam veterans will be dedicated and put up in Harmon Park later this month.

The park is a also home to a World War II monument.

But Cantrell says a memorial specific to Vietnam soldiers is long overdue.

Cantrell says family members of the fallen heroes will play a role in the dedication ceremony by carving a piece from the new monument. That's scheduled for Sept. 19.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

The project, originally scheduled for 2013. It was set back due to health problems with the monument's sculptor, Albert Nelson.

According to the city, Nelson created the World War II monument that graces the park's bandstand and the huge baseball glove that sits at the entrance of the home of the Louisville Slugger in Louisville, Kentucky.
