A car crash takes the life of an East Texas teenager and star athlete. The Department of Public Safety says the Whitehouse High School Junior lost control of his car Tuesday night and hit an oncoming car. School administrators say Alex Fleming, 17, was on his way home from studying when the accident happened. They say Fleming was the model student-athlete.
"Alex was a great leader on our football team, a junior looking forward to his senior year," said Randy McFarlin, Whitehouse Head Football Coach. A cornerback for the Whitehouse Wildcats last year, Fleming helped lead his football team to their first district title in 29 years.
"Alex was just the perfect athlete to work with," said McFarlin. "He was there everyday, and he listened to you. He loved football. Even some family members this morning thanked us for the memories of the football season last year." His trademark, McFarlin says was his gold shoes.
"In order to wear gold shoes you have to be fast, and Alex was fast," said McFarlin. "Today the kids remember Alex as gold shoes." Alex wasn't just a star football player. He played the trumpet in the high school band and excelled in the classroom.
"We were talking to his history class this morning and how he was just the leader in that class," said Tony Black, Whitehouse High School Principal. "Anytime a question was asked in the classroom, all the other kids turned and waited for him to answer because he always seemed to have the answer." Most of all, the school says Alex was a great friend, and one that will be greatly missed.
"We just ask everyone to remember the Fleming family and the Whitehouse family in their players as we go through this tough time," said McFarlin. Black says they had additional counselors at school Wednesday, and will for the rest of the week. McFarlin canceled spring football practice as well. The funeral is set for Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler.
