Fight Against Breast Cancer Hits the Hardwood
By: Christy Hendricks

CARBDONDALE, Ill. - Three minutes may seem like a long time in a basketball game, but every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

That's a very serious statistic, so the SIU women's basketball team and Southern Illinois Healthcare teamed up for the second annual "Pink Out" at Friday night's game.

Folks doned pink shirts, pink hair, pink flowers, and pink bodies all to raise a lot of money.

For cancer patients like Dona Lach, the Pink Out is also a time to raise awareness.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer in July after a regular mammogram.

"I couldn't believe it at first. Me? No? Cause every year I go in for a mammogram and always negative so I just assumed this year would be the same, but of course it wasn't," Lach said.

The money raised goes to the Women With Hope breast cancer support group, a cause dear to head coach Dana Eikenberg's heart.

"Personally, both my grandmother and mother was affected by breast cancer so it's something I'm check regularly for as a role model and leader of this women's team," Eikenberg said.

Die hard Saluki fan, 84-year-old Evelyn Rawls found her breast cancer after a self exam.

"I've been a survivor 29 and a half years," she said.

It's stories like Evelyn's that give new cancer patients like Dona, hope in the fight against cancer.

"Your life isn't over if you've been diagnosed with cancer.  You can go on and I think that's really important," Lach said.

The pink out honored about 80 cancer survivors.

They don't have a final total of how much money raised, but a spokesman with Southern Illinois Healthcase says they raised at least $7000.

It's important to note that Dona and Evelyn found their breast cancer by a regular mammogram or self exam. So it shows how important it is to keep up with regular breast exams.
