Simoniz Fix-it: Does it Work?

With Fix-it, scratches may have met their match, but Fix-it, you may have met your match with the Does it Work test!

Jake Ruebel, owner of Cooley's Auto Repair in Cape Girardeau, is our expert.  He specializes in mechanics, especially on foreign cars, but he does not do body work, so he will have an expert, unbiased opinion....already, he's unsure about this $30 product.

"It is a toy!" says Jake as he pulls out the power buffer.

Right away, neither one of us is too impressed with the so-called power buffer.  It's hard to get a feel for what this really is on TV, but I can tell you, it's made with cheap foam.

"It's awfully small and it only runs off two AA batteries.  Most good buffers costs hundreds of dollars and plug into a wall," notes Jake.

But we'll give it a try.  The simple directions say to shake Fix-it well, then apply it to a scratch, and buff away.  In his spare-time, Jake's working on restoring a car for his own use, so we'll see if Fix-it can help, too.

"Looks like it might be doing something," says Jake as he buffs away on the small scratch.

Next, we use a microfiber towel, just like the directions say, and wipe away.  Hopefully, we won't see a scratch, but...

"It's still there!" says Jake.

We're not done with this test just yet.  Even though the directions don't tell us to do this, Jake knows, to truly repair a scratch, you often need to use fine sandpaper to sand down the clear coat, then repair the scratch at the surface.  So, he'll do that, and then use Fix-it.

"Here's the moment of truth," he says.

We look at the scratch and don't see a bit of a difference!

"Nope, it wouldn't even take out scratches with 1500 grit!" which is a really fine sandpaper, says Jake.

We don't have any better luck trying to repair this door that Jake purposely "keyed."

"This is going to get ugly!" Jake says as he keys the car.

"This little thing is soo cute!" laughs Jake using the power buffer.

That's about all it is!  It didn't do anything!

Before we fail Fix-it, I do want to give you a comparison.  Jake recommends Mequiar's Scratch Repair.  He uses it on some of the scratches on the car, and it doesn't totally take the scratch away but it does do a much better job than Fix-it, and more importantly, Mequiar' is half the cost of Fix-it.

"I'd give Fix-it a D minus or an F," says Jake.

He points out: Fix-it may work on a lighter-colored car, but only on fine scratches--definitely not key marks.  However, the commercial shows a black car getting "fixed" and that's also what we used.  Still, it costs almost $30!  That said, the only thing Fix-it wipes away is a failing grade "F!"

The consensus was clear in Ms. Beers' third grade class at Jefferson Elementary, the Fingerlings baby monkey is a toy they want.
