Save a Blade: Does it Work?
By: Lauren Keith

Just like its name, the Save a Blade promises to keep you from tossing that disposable razor too soon, and save you some money in the long run.  Sherry Brown of East Cape Girardeau, IL, shaves daily, so let's see what she thinks of this $20 gadget.

"Razors are expensive, so for 20 bucks, if this works, I'd love to have it," she says.

The Save a Blade comes assembled, and with the press of a button, supposedly, we can turn a dull razor into a brand new one.  You can see part of the strip on our first disposable razor is even tearing off.  I believe it's a Gillette model.

"Whoa!" Sherry jumps back after pressing the start button on the Save a Blade!

I'm not sure if you want to use this gadget during your morning shower because you might wake someone up!  It's a loud little machine.  At first, Sherry and I have a hard time knowing if the Save a Blade is really sharpening our razor.

"I don't think it looks real good, Lauren," says Sherry.

But when we use a different style razor with three blades, we hear a different sharpening sound, so that makes us wonder if we had the first razor properly installed; the sections aren't very clear.

"Ok, there's the difference.  You need to put it close to the edge towards the Save a Blade logo," says Sherry.

So, we use it on three razors.  We think the Save a Blade sharpened both razors, but the only way to find out.  Time to shave!  First, we start with the one-blade Gillette..

"It's shaving like a new razor, it's amazing.  I even knicked myself!"  says Sherry.

Yikes! The Save a Blade might work too well.

"It's smooth, very smooth!" says Sherry.

The other three-blade razor works equally as well, but before I tell you this blade sharpener has a leg up on the rest, let's see *how* it works.

Sherry and I take the Save a Blade apart.  We find it runs on one AA battery, two grinding wheels, and the sharpening edge actually feels like a coarse piece of sandpaper.  It's actually carbide.

So, I'm not sure how long this will last, and I'll check back in with Sherry in a few months to see. In the meantime, she really likes this little gadget.

"If I spent 20 bucks, then bought 6-razors, and they last me six months by using the Save a Blade, then that's an investment," she says.

Even though her legs are pretty beat up, Sherry still thinks this Save a Blade is pretty sharp..

"I'm bleeding, but I'd still give it an 'A.'" she says.

So, the Save a Blade makes the cut---earning an 'A' on this Does it Work test.  I bought it at Walgreens.

NOTE:  I left the Save a Blade with Sherry for about a week.  She says her old razor is still going strong and she only had to sharpen the blade once since then.  I'll leave it with  her and check back to see how long this gadget runs.  It's supposed to last up to 200 shaves.  So, look for an update in future editions of Does it Work Wednesday.
