EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. - Not many people would say they're thankful for their cancer, but one Heartland woman has taken what could be devastating and turned it into an opportunity.

Linda Thurmond uses her breast cancer story to lead others in the fight for a cure.

But she didn't get involved in cancer fundraising until she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She found her cancer after a yearly mammogram in November of 2006.

"I just started crying.  My husband started crying.  It's just devastating.  You just think it won't happen to you.  It's just something that you deal with," said Linda.

After a double masectomy and eight rounds of chemo, she's now cancer free and leading a team of 20 ladies in the Mississippi County Relay for Life.

She's selling T-shirts, pins, and organizing bake sales.  Her team is well on their way to reaching their goal of $10,000.

"Not just raising the money but to show people that there's somebody there that care and that supports them," Linda said.

That support from her friends, family and faith got Linda through her cancer journey.

"I have my testimony and it says "Thank God for my breast cancer." I know a lot of people think that's silly to say that but I've had two sons to get saved since this happened to me," Linda said.  "There's tragedies that turn things into triumphs. This is something that i've dealt with and without God I couldn't have got through it."

The Mississippi County Relay for life is Friday, May 30th at the East Prairie High School.
