Does it Work: One Touch Jar Opener
By: Lauren Keith

Remember two summers ago when I featured the One Touch Can Opener?  What a time we had!  After all the struggling to get my can opener to work, the ladies at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel finally figured out not all One Touch Can Openers are made equal. Ours was a dud; others worked.

Now, the company says it'll open stubborn jar lids!

"By the same company, huh," says one of the original testers Sara Guebert.

Sara Guebert and Dolorys Meyr will try to open several different sizes of never-opened jar lids.  Probably no surprise here, it takes a few tries and definitely more than "one touch" to get this thing working.

First, a wide pickle jar. The Jar Opener pops right off.  Our second attempt now on a smaller jar, and yet again, no luck.

But it turns out, it's not the lid that's the problem. The directions say to listen for a pause, and then take your finger off the button.  I say "wait for the grinding" noise, let it take hold, and then it'll work!

"Hey, it works!" we shout.

We like it so much now, we want to try more jars! We also find the One Touch works on jars that have been in the fridge, so long as you wipe 'em down.

It appears this doesn't work on plastic lids.  The One Touch needs something to really grip to. Gotta say though...at this point....we're starting to get a little annoyed with the racket this thing makes, even though it is a good product.

"How do you turn it off? That's annoying," says Sara.

Wouldn't you know in her shameless attempt for some free publicity, this Pampered Chef rep' whips out a similar jar opener.  It's not automatic, but it's ten dollars cheaper *and* takes up less space.

"Just call (573) 335-7772!" she shouts.

Good grief! OK, let's get back to business.

"Probably a B minus because it's another thing to put in your drawer, and you have to buy batteries for it all of the time," says Dolorys.

"Somewhere between B to B plus because it did work, it's not hard to operate, but I don't have the patience for it to go through it's whole cycle.  The noise is very annoying, and it's be very annoying to my husband!" says Sara.

Ok, I'll make the final call - the $20 One Touch Jar Opener pops open a good 'B' on this Does it Work test.

For this test, I bought the One Touch at Target in Cape Girardeau.
