Debbie Meyer Bread Bags: Does it Work?
By: Lauren Keith

Maybe you remember this time last year when I tested informercial queen Debbie Meyer's biggest selling product...her "Green Bags?"  If not, I won't subject you to the rotten, spoiled, molded results.  The video shows why I failed the so-called "produce saving" bags.

Still, a lot of you emailed me telling me about your success.  I think it depends what type of produce you put in them.  When I saw Debbie Meyer's new Bread Bags, I decided to give the informercial queen a second chance.

"They feel almost feel like wax paper," says Amy Diamond of Cape Girardeau.

Amy's my tester this time.  By the way, she also didn't have any luck with the Green Bags.

"I'm not thinking Debbie Meyer is going to do so well with these either," she predicts.

Still, we're going to give this an earnest effort.  First up, half a loaf of bread stacked normal in its own bag; the other half in Debbie's Bread Bags.  Next, we'll stack the slices on top of one another---hey, we've got extra bread here.

Again, I'm just trying to make this work any which way I can.  Besides, the directions aren't very descriptive.  All it says is to fold the bread bags over, pushing out all excess air.

"It's hard to fold over and not twist," notes Amy.

She and I will also compare bakery fresh bagels.  We'll also thaw some frozen hot dog buns and see what happens.

"I don't see much of a difference.  To me, trying to squish out all the air seems like more effort than is really needed," says Amy.

We'll see.  Amy marks our test date on her calendar.  Right on the product box you see the claim: in 11 days we should still have fresh bread in Debbie Meyer's bags.  Here's what happened.

"I'm afraid I'll get sick!" says Amy as she welcomes our cameras back into her home 11 days later.

Here's your two-second warning...11 days later....the bagels are the worst.  No difference at all from those in the bread bags to those in the bakery wrap.

"It's like a science experiment gone wrong!" says a disgusted Amy.  The bagels have turned an interesting turquoise color.

"For me, this would be the whole purpose of the bags--to keep things fresh from the bakery going bad," says Amy.

The bread hasn't molded, but it's stale and hard.  Again, no difference, so Debbie didn't save us anything.

"Again, purposeless!"  she says.

Now, the hot dog buns held up pretty well---but they look the same from Debbie's bags to the original package.  So, why spend $10 on the Bread Bags then?

"Absolutely not," affirms Amy.

Debbie, we tried.....

"Give 'em a big fat 'F!" says Amy.

We're not eating the claim this product is servin' up.  Debbie Meyer's Bread Bags get a stale 'F' on this Does it Work test.
