CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A diagnosis of breast cancer can be an emotional roller coaster, but it can be much easier when you don't have to take that ride alone.

The Bosom Buddies program sponsored by Southeast Hospital not only provides a group for breast cancer survivors to share their experience, it gives them the chance to the celebrate the sweet victories in life.

Every month these ladies meet to support each other.

Lori Faire helped start the Bosom Buddies program nearly five years ago.

"All these ladies we've been through pretty much the same thing and you kinda feed off of each other off of what one has been through versus another and you see how that person has coped with what they've gone through and you can apply it to your own life and you just gain a lot of support," Faire said.

The support comes in many forms.  Nurses are on hand every meeting to answer medical questions.

"So we're just here to let them know what's going on or that that's normal," said Terri Stuckey, assistant nurse manager with Southeast Hospital. "Just kind of trouble shoot with them ideas or help them through the experience they're going through."

Then, there's the emotional support they get each time they meet.

"Emotionally, yea, you are dealing with a lot of emotion that women do not realize that they do have these emotions until they get with a group that's going through the same thing," Faire said.

Especially at the group's Valentine's Day party, it's the commradary, stories, and chocolate that form the strong bonds of friendship and inspires others.

"These ladies are very strong women," Stuckey said. "They don't give up.  They have a lot of drive and spirit. They don't let it get them down."

"You cry, you laugh together and when you leave you just feel so good," Faire said. "You just feel so uplifted."

The Bosom Buddies program meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Healthpoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau.  Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with breast cancer can attend.
